The following information is a guide to aid residents of East Washington on how to run for Borough Council or Mayor. Additional information is available at the Washington County Election office.
The following positions are open for the 2021 election:
- Mayor of East Washington (Incumbent Michael Gomber)
- Council Seat (Incumbent Maryann Weinstein)
- Council Seat (Incumbent Demond Nixon)
- Council Seat (Incumbent Kris LaGreca)
Step 01: Pick up an Election Packet
To run for an office, you must make that decision now. The Washington County Election office will post a calendar of important due dates. This includes the initial voting pack that you can pick up at the Election Office at Courthouse Square, 100 W. Beau St., Suite 206, Washington, PA 15301. This packet will include the following required document for filing as a candidate:
- Candidate’s Affidavit*
- Nominating Petition/Paper to gather signatures from residents
- Copy of Statement of Financial Interests*
(Please note that there is no filing fee for Mayor or Council seat)
* These documents need to be notarized.
Step 02: Gather Signatures
Once you have picked up the packet you are required to gather a minimum of 10 signatures from registered voters from your party (i.e. Democrat/Republican). It is recommended that candidates should collect more than the minimum signatures to withstand any potential signature challenges. This is also a great opportunity to introduce themselves to residents.
Step 03: Turn in Documents
When you have gathered the required signatures and completed & notarized the Candidate Affidavit and Statement of Financial Interests you must return these documents to the Washington County Election Office. You must also provide a copy of the Statement of Financial Interest to the Borough Secretary at the Borough Building on Thayer Street by the last day to register before the primary on the election calendar. For 2021 the first day to circulate is February 16 and the filing deadline is March 9.
After completing these steps you will be registered for the primary election! We encourage candidates to introduce themselves to residents and campaign for the position. The Washington County Election office can provide you additional information about expenses incurred for campaigning.
If you win the primary you will then be a candidate for the general election in November. Good luck.
