EAST WASHINGTON, PA (December 27, 2021) – This week, Mayor Demond Nixon, East Washington Council, and Chief David Bradley announce the arrival of the new Tesla Model 3 vehicle to the police force. The new Police car, ordered in July of 2021, is outfitted for service as East Washington’s first all-electric police vehicle. After final approval and inspection of the delivery, East Washington will join the growing ranks of communities moving to all-electric vehicles for active police duty.
“The introduction of an electric car as a police vehicle is not only a practical choice but also an economical one,” said Mayor Nixon. “With high gas prices, the benefits of an electric car will have an increased positive effect on our operating budget every year it is in service.”
The Borough purchased the AWD Model 3 through the Pennsylvania CoStars program and fully outfitted it for police duty before final delivery. The Tesla vehicle is completely battery-powered and does not have a conventional gas engine.
Electric vehicles are increasingly selected for service by police departments all across the country. They have numerous advantages over gas vehicles; superior handling and safety, environmental concerns, and reduced operating cost savings over the life of the vehicle.
The Borough and Mayor’s office is organizing an upcoming event for residents interested in viewing the new Police car to get a close-up look at it or ask questions.
